DEFINITION OF RENEWABLE ENERGY
Renewable energy refers to energy sources that are naturally replenished at a significantly higher rate than they are used. Solar energy, wind energy and hydroelectric energy are all examples of renewable energy. A solar water heater uses solar panels to heat water, which can then be used for domestic purposes. A photovoltaic panel is an electronic device that converts light directly into electricity.
Photovoltaic panels convert light into electricity through the photovoltaic effect. Sunlight hits the panel and detaches electrons from their atoms; when these electrons recombine with other atoms in the panel, they release energy in the form of photons of light and heat.

Solar water heaters work by using solar radiation to heat water for hot showers and dishwashing. They consist of an insulated tank for water storage, two black glass-covered pipes running next to each other (a cooler pipe and a warmer pipe), a circulation pump that keeps the two pipes filled with fluid, and a special “absorber” panel made of a thin plastic film placed between the pipes to capture the sun’s radiant heat. Because water is very dense, it absorbs heat very well, especially when it flows slowly.

WHAT IS RENEWABLE ENERGY?
Renewable energy is energy that comes from renewable resources, which are naturally replenished on a human timeline. They include solar energy, wind energy, water, geothermal energy and biofuels.
Renewable resources are very important as they represent no threat to the environment, since their use does not alter the amount of natural resources available for future generations. This means that these sources can be used permanently without any negative consequences on the environment.
Renewable energy sources are also very useful in reducing or limiting greenhouse gas emissions. They require very little energy to convert to other forms and are easy to transport to population centres. One of the main advantages of using renewable energy sources is that they pollute much less than non-renewable sources.
Photovoltaic (PV) cells produce electricity directly from light, using solar panels made of semiconductor materials. In a photovoltaic system, sunlight strikes the PV cells and generates small amounts of electrical current.
